Almost everyone expected the Dutch team to at least give a strong competition to the Lankan team after their heroics in the qualification matches. But what really turned out was rather anti climatic and disappointing for the Dutch fans. Sri Lanka defeated Netherlands by 9 wickets with 15 overs remaining, which is a world record in itself.
The Dutch being asked to bat first by the Lankan captain after they won the toss, registered the lowest total ever in a T20 international as they were bowled out for a paltry score of 39. They never looked like being in any touch what so ever with the competition at this level as they lost their first 3 wickets when they had added only one run to the total. None of the Dutch batsmen could even register double figures except Tom cooper, who top scored with 16 runs.
Sri Lanka in reply chased down the total in only 5 overs as they registered the biggest victory in T20 cricket in terms of balls remaining. Although they did get a scare when Kushal Perrera was hit on the hands of the very first ball and looked to be injured, they came back strong and achieved the target for the loss of Kushal Perrera’s wicket.
The match itself was record breaking in many ways as various records were set, but it cannot be said that the team that set those records would be proud of all of them. Sri Lanka are now placed on the top of group 1 with a very healthy net run rate, and another victory would guarantee a place in the semi’s to them. They now face England on the 27th of March.
The Dutch on the other hand would look to get over this humiliating defeat and pass it on as a bad dream and concentrate on their games in their future. They have tougher and better opponents to face as the tournament progresses ahead. They next face South Africa on the 27th of March.
Result: Sri Lanka defeated Netherlands by 9 wickets and 15 overs to spare
Man of the match: Angelo Matthews.
