New Delhi: The senior selection committee announced the Indian team for the upcoming ODI series against Australia on Saturday. The biggest change was the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new captain of India’s ODI team. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain in the team, but by appointing Gill as captain, the BCCI has signaled that the team is now focusing on the future.
Following the announcement of the ODI team, it is almost certain that the path of ODI careers for Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami is becoming increasingly difficult. Both players were part of India’s Champions Trophy-winning team, but now the selectors are eyeing new talent. Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar had previously stated that Shami has played very little domestic cricket in the last few years and will need to play regularly to make a comeback.
Jadeja was appointed vice-captain in the ongoing Test series against the West Indies, where he won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance. He stated that he has been working hard on his fitness and batting. Despite this, his omission from the ODI team has been disappointing.
The ODI series between India and Australia will begin in Perth on October 19. This will be followed by matches in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25. It will be immediately followed by a five-match T20 series starting on October 29 and running until November 8.
The opportunities given to young players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel indicate that Indian cricket is gradually being handed over to a new generation. Rohit and Kohli may now be seen in the role of team mentors.
