New Delhi: India has played 9 Test matches at Old Trafford ground in Manchester so far, but could not win even one. India played its first match on this ground in 1936, which was a draw. At that time, the captain of the team was the Maharaja of Vijayanagaram. After this, the matches played in 1946, 1971, 1982 and 1990 were also draws. At the same time, India had to face a crushing defeat in 1952, 1959, 1974 and 2014.
In these nine matches, different captains of India led the team. In 1952, under the leadership of Vijay Hazare, India lost by an innings and 207 runs. In 1959, under the leadership of Dutta Gaikwad, India lost by 171 runs. In 1974, under the leadership of Ajit Wadekar, India lost by 113 runs. In 2014, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India lost by an innings and 54 runs. The remaining matches were drawn.
If India fails to register a win in Manchester this time too, it will become the first ground where the team has played 10 or more Test matches and has not registered a single win. So far, India has played 9 matches each in both Manchester and Barbados and has remained winless at both places.

India is the only team that has played 9 Tests in two different grounds (Manchester and Barbados) and has not registered a win. Apart from this, Australia has played 9 matches in Karachi in which 5 were lost and 4 were drawn. Bangladesh lost 7 out of 9 and played 2 draws at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Stadium. Sri Lanka played 9 Tests at Lord’s in which they lost 3 times and drew 6 times.

Interestingly, the fifth Test of the series between India and England in 2021 was to be held in Manchester itself. India was leading the series 2-1 at that time and was a strong contender for the match. But due to the corona virus, the match was canceled even before it started. In the current tour, India has created history by registering its first win in its ninth attempt in Birmingham, and now it will be hoped to repeat a similar history in Manchester.
