New Delhi: India and Sri Lanka, co-hosts of next year’s T20 World Cup, haven’t had the same fate. While India’s path to the group stage looks easy, Sri Lanka has been assigned a very challenging group. Even before the teams’ matches, discussions have begun about how different the hosts’ fortunes are.
India (ICC Rank 1) has been assigned a group in which only Pakistan (Rank 7) is a major Test-playing nation. The USA (18), Namibia (15), and the Netherlands (13) are also included.
The goal is clear, India doesn’t seem to have much difficulty reaching the Super 8, although everyone remembers Pakistan’s defeat against the USA in 2024.
Sri Lanka (Rank 8) has been assigned a group where every match could be as tough as a knockout.
The group includes Australia (2), Zimbabwe (11), Ireland (12), and Oman (20).
With three Test nations and a competitive associate team, Sri Lanka faces a formidable challenge.
England (3), West Indies (6), and Bangladesh (9) — three major contenders together.
With Nepal (17) and Italy (28) included — this also looks like a “Group of Death.”
South Africa (5) will need to overcome New Zealand (4) or Afghanistan (10) to avoid relying only on victories over the UAE and Canada.
India will open its campaign against the USA, then face Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands.
The India-Pakistan match is scheduled for Colombo.
In India, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Delhi will be the host cities.
Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the final — but if Pakistan reaches the final, the venue could be shifted to Colombo.
