The 15-member squad that the Indian selectors picked for the 2015 ICC World Cup was more or less on the expected lines. There are no major surprises even as the non-selection of a few would have led to some disappointment. Yuvraj Singh’s three back-to-back centuries in the ongoing Ranji Trophy wasn’t good enough for him to earn a surprise selection in the squad.
Stuart Binny’s selection has raised a few eyebrows. His selection comes much on the merit of his domestic performances, exactly from where the call for Yuvraj’s inclusion came from. The first being – how good is Binny to be selected in the Indian side for the World Cup. Barring a six-wicket haul against Bangladesh with the ball, there isn’t much that the Karnataka all-rounder has done in the nine chances he has got in One-Day Internationals. Even as he remains the only medium pace all-rounder for Team India, he doesn’t seem to trouble the batsmen with his pace. With his bat, he hasn’t done anything noteworthy either.
The selectors have taken a gamble by having Binny in the side ahead of a frontline pacer like Varun Aaron or a batsman like Murali Vijay who has been in splendid form in Australia.
Now, with concerns over Jadeja’s shoulder, it is highly likely that Binny might make it to the starting XI. If he shows the kind of form that has held him in good stead in domestic cricket, he will be a crucial asset in Dhoni’s plans for the World up. If he fails, he can be carted all over the small New Zealand grounds.
