India had a perfect ending to Day 5 in a rather unimpressive display on Day 5 of Rio Olympics 2016. India started to get good news with the selection of Dipa Karmakar on Day 3, Athanu Das qualifying for finals on Day 4. A day before also saw boxer Krishan Vikas advancing towards the finals. Indian hockey team too kept hopes alive, registering a win against Argentina after a long gap. Abhinav Bindra crashing out of the Olympics broke millions of hearts in the country with the narrow defeat he had in the finals. Indians have not yet been able to win a single medal in Rio Olympics 2016 but there are certain advancements which are directing towards a better state of India on medals tally towards the ending stages of the tournament. Deepika Kumari won hearts with her performance in Round of 32 by beating Kristine Esebua in her first clash. The spectacular performance was followed by another against Guendalina Sartori in Round of 16. Her performance was a stellar one as he had a perfect set finishing off the proceedings in her last game of the day. She will be playing in 1/8 tomorrow, hopes are high from her as it might end up in India getting their first medal this year.
Laishram Bombayla Devi too showed her mettle in archery. She first defeated Laurence Baldauff followed by win against Shih-Chia Lin to reach 1/8 eliminators. It was a complete joy to watch Bombayla coming back into the match after lagging behind in first set and then winning the game. India have another hope of a medal with archer Bombayla advancing.
After boxer Krishan Vikas qualifying on Day 4, boxer Manoj Kumar on Day 5 yielded results as he defeated London Olympics; bronze medalist Petrauskas. Manoj did well to maintain his distance and tiring out the opponent and playing his moves afterwards. He endured a few meaty blows from his opponent but somehow managed to get through three rounds of play and emerge as a winner by 2-1. He will be going up against Fazluddin Gaiznazarov of Uzbekistan in Round of 16 on August 14.
Shooting brought more disappointment on Day 5 as Jitu Rai crashed out early in 50m Air Pistol. Jitu had to settle for 12th position as his shots were way too off target. The shooter lost control towards the ending stages of last round and ended up losing the eliminator. Shooter Prakash Nanjappa took an early exit finishing on 24th position after a far from impressive display of shooting.
India’s Women hockey team suffered another humiliating defeat in the hands of Australia as they were hammered by 1-6 in a goal fest. Indian hockey team never looked in the game as they were outclassed by Australian in every department of the game. They are currently placed a the the bottom of their pool and will be fancying their chances against USA and Argentina.
Judo player Avtar Singh too led down India’s hopes as he lost to Popole Misenga of Refugee team. In weighlifting category Satish Shivalingam too could not live upto the expectations and only managed to lift 329 kg in comparison of winner who was able to lift 346 kg in 77 kg weight category.
