Day 7 was a big day for India at Rio as both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles teams were playing to win after their first loss in their previous games. Indian women pair Jwala gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were pitted against Netherlands’ Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek while the Men’s pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy were playing China’s Chai Biao and Hong Wei. However, both the teams ended up on the losing side as their opponents put up a better game taking victory for their countries.

It started with Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa playing against Netherlands in the Women’s Doubles Badminton clash. This was a thrilling game as the Indian pair gave the Dutch a tough fight after losing the first game 16-21. While the Indians won the second game 21-16, the Duthc pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek was too good in the third set closing the match at 16-21, 21-16, 17-21. This also led to the Gutta-Ponnappa pair crashing out of the preliminaries and bidding goodbye to this year’s Olympics. The Indian women pair will still be playing their final Group A clash against Thailand’s Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who are also out of the Games.

This loss was followed by the Men’s doubles match between India’s Manu Attri-Sumeeth Reddy and China’s Chai Biao and Hong Wei. This was a one-sided game right from the word Go as the World no.5 Chinese pair dominated proceedings and emerged victorious in both sets winning the match 21-13, 21-15. The Indian duo which had earlier lost to Indonesia in a similar manner (18-21, 13-21) has now crashed out of Olympics 2016.
