Over the last few weeks, Patiala, Pune and Rajkot witnessed the wrath of a man out to prove a point; for whom the path from ashes to glory is a known territory. Yuvraj Singh has lit up the ongoing season of the Ranji Trophy season with three back-to-back centuries. After being left out of India’s preliminary squad for the 2015 ICC World Cup and the Indian cricket board’s central contract, the Chandigarh batsman has unleashed his vintage self to remind selectors of the hunger that is still keeping him going.
With the selectors set to announce the final 15 for the World Cup on January 6, it is unlikely that Yuvraj will get another chance to prove himself worthy of a spot. But he has done well to shift the question of his inclusion from ‘whether he is good enough’ to ‘whom do we drop to fit him in?’ Yes, there is a good pool of young talent that has proved itself worthy to be a part of limited-overs cricket’s grandest contest. But their prowess in conditions abroad is yet to give out satisfactory results.
Yuvraj, on the other hand, is a proven performer of the 2007 ICC World T20 and the 2011 50-over World Cup, two of India’s biggest cricketing triumphs in recent times. It is not about his past performances, but a familiar fire that he has displayed during the big tournaments that makes an argument for his selection important. In 2011, he came into the World Cup battling with ill-health and poor form. The show he managed to put in the one and a half months of the tournament was a spectacle of legends. However, his personal health and form deteriorated since then. He underwent a successful chemotherapy of germ-cell cancer to regain health and fitness, but form continued to desert him. But with just a few days to go for the team selection for the World Cup, he has given hope – for his legion of fans who long to see those graceful glorious cover-drives and hope to himself that he is not down and out yet!
