India vs Australia 1st Test: After suggesting his starting XI for Australia for the 1st Test at Adelaide, former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has picked the bowling unit he feels India should field. It comprises of Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Ponting felt Shami is good with the new ball and Shami is a great component of reverse swing, which he felt was required. He felt Umesh Yadav over Jasprit Bumrah would be a better choice as Bumrah can be kept fresh for the later part of the four-match Test series.
When it came to picking spinners, he felt Kuldeep Yadav is a must as he is a wrist spinner and can spin the ball anywhere. With Ravichandran Ashwin, Ponting reckoned he could play the holding role from one end with his experience.
Meanwhile, after backing Aaron Finch to open for Australia in the first Test against India at Adelaide, the former Australian captain has picked his starting XI for the Test. The XI features Marcus Harris at the top with Finch, his side comprises of three fast bowlers in Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cumins with Mitchell Marsh being the all-rounder. Nathan Lyon is the only spinner he has picked as expected.
“He’s (Finch) had a lot of success around the world opening the batting in T20s and one day internationals – if he can go in with a similar mindset and not worry too much about opening the batting in a Test match in Australia against the red ball, I’m sure he’ll have some success,” Ponting was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
