India vs Australia: BCCI named a 12-member squad for the 1st Test at Adelaide starting tomorrow. It was a surprise as Rohit Sharma and Hanuma Vihari both were included in the squad, which also means that in all probability Rohit will open the batting with Murali Vijay. KL Rahul is also in the squad. The pace battery for India includes M Shami, I Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav have not been picked.
It looks like a squad on predicted lines apart from the inclusion of Rohit Sharma, who had not played a Test since January in South Africa. It was his limited overs show that got him in the reckoning and now it is up to him to make the most of this and cement his spot as a Test player as well.
Vihari also played a crucial an 80-odd knock for India against CA XI in the practice match. He can also chip in with occasional off-break to help the bowlers take a breather, hence his inclusion is a wise move.
It is also surprising that India has opted for just one spinner and that is the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin and they have not gone for the wrist spinner in Kuldeep Yadav.
Pant has got a go-ahead of the more experienced Parthiv Patel, which highlights the direction in which the thinktank is thinking.
Team India’s 12 for the 1st Test against Australia in Adelaide: Virat Kohli (C), A Rahane (VC), KL Rahul, M Vijay, C Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, R Pant (WK), R Ashwin, M Shami, I Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah
