The Indian men’s hockey team have booked their berth in the quarterfinal stages of the Paris Olympics 2024 after their 2-0 over Ireland in the Pool B match on Tuesday. The next test for skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s side will be Belgium in their penultimate Pool B of the Paris Games.
The Red Lions are currently on top of the Pool B table with three wins from as many matches, while the Indians are a rung below in the second place with two wins and a draw. The Belgians thrashed the mighty Australia team 6-2 in their previous match and will be full of confidence going into the match against India.
The Indians have looked in their campaign so far, scraping past New Zealand and only securing a last-minute draw against Argentina before posting a battling win against Ireland in their last match.
New Zealand and Ireland are out of the race after suffering three consecutive losses. Only the top four can make the last-eight stage cut.
Indians have a score to settle against the Belgians as they lost to these same opponents in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 semifinals. Belgium went on to win gold in the previous Olympics and also the 2018 Hockey World Cup champions.
In their last 5 matches, Belgians have won 4 while India has won just one of those matches. Overall at the Olympics, the two sides have faced each other 7 times in the past with Belgium winning 3, India winning 3 and one match ending in a draw. In total, India have a massive edge of having 51 matches out of 91 while Belgium have won 25 times and 15 games have been draws.
