Ace Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday suffered a minor hand injury and as a precautionary measure did not take the field on the second day of the ongoing three-day practice game against Essex.
Ashwin was hit on the right hand during a net session this morning. To avoid any further damage, Ashwin decided not to bowl, bat or field today. The Indian team management said that the physio has taken a look and deduced that it was only a minor injury. The off-spinner later bowled in the nets during the lunch break today.
Earlier in the day, England announced their squad for the first Test in which they recalled right-arm spinner Adil Rashid. Rashid returns to the squad for the first time since he played in the fifth Test against India at Chennai in December 2016.
The leg-spinner has been in fine form in one-day cricket this summer taking 20 wickets at an average of 23.95 in England’s series victories over Australia and India. If selected, Rashid, who signed a white-ball only deal with Yorkshire in February, will play his first Test in England having earned his previous 10 away from home. Read more
The first Test begins in Birmingham on August 1 and spinners are likely to play a key role, considering the hot conditions, suitable for Indian bowlers.
