Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara added 226 runs for the third wicket as India at stumps on day one of the second Test against England at Vizag are 317 for four. India after winning the toss elected to bat first on a wicket which is expected to support spinners as the match progresses. However, early strikes by Stuart Broad and James Anderson left the home team in trouble. Broad in the second over of the day removed KL Rahul, who replaced Gautam Gambhir, for a duck. Few overs later, Anderson had Murali Vijay caught to leave India at 26 for two. Before his dismissal, Vijay looked in good touch. However, the right-hander fell on an individual score of 20 runs. With India in trouble, captain Kohli and Pujara took the centre stage and bailed the home side out of the initial slump. The duo added 226-run as India kept England bowlers at bay. Kohli however was dropped by Adil Rashid at fine leg when he was batting on 56. After that Kohli never looked back and continued to dominate. Kohli and Pujara then registered century each. While it was Pujara’s 10th Test ton, which he brought up with a six, Kohli then few overs later notched up his hundred as well. For Kohli it was his 14th Test ton and seventh as captain.
The mammoth stand between Kohli and Pujara was broken when Anderson removed the former. Pujara while looking to score of a wide delivery edged it to the keeper and fell after scoring 119. His innings included 12 fours and two sixes. At fall of Pujara’s wicket, India’s score read 248 for three.
Kohli then added 68 runs for the second wicket with Ajinkya Rahane. Just at the brink of stumps, Anderson struck with the second new ball as he removed Rahane (23). When play was called off, Kohli was batting on 151 while Ashwin had scored just one run. On day two India will look to add to its overnight tally of runs and notch up a big first innings total.
For England, Anderson, who returned after an injury, picked three wickets while Broad picked a wicket as well. England spin troika of Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Zafar Ansari were ineffective on a wicket that is tagged as spin friendly and went wicket-less on day one.
