With five wickets down England at stumps on day two of second Test against India at Vizag were 103, trailing by 352 runs. After India managed to post 455 in their first innings, England were undone by some quality bowling. Resuming on an overnight score of 317 for four, India were bowled out for 455. The hosts could add just 138 more runs with the loss of six wickets. Virat Kohli who started the day on 151 was the first wicket to fell when Moeen Ali had him caught in the slip. The Indian captain fell for 167. Ali then further dented India by removing Wriddhiman Saha (3) and Ravindra Jadeja (0) in quick succession.
It was then the 64-run stand for the eighth wicket between Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav that took India close to 450. During this stand, Ashwin scored his Test career’s eighth half-century. With a decent first innings total and helpful conditions backing them, Indian bowlers then made early inroads to leave visitors tottering at 80 for five at one stage. Mohammad Shami started the proceedings for India and in his second over removed England captain Alastair Cook (2). Shami produced a peach of a delivery to send the English captain back to the hutch. Haseeb Hameed and Joe Root then made sure England do no lose further wickets and took their side to safety at tea with score reading 34 for one.
Things changes drastically after the tea break, with India finding wickets in quick succession. Hameed (13) was run-out courtesy excellent work by Jayant Yadav and Wriddhiman Saha. Ashwin then picked two wickets in shape of Ben Duckett (5) and Root (53).
Spinner Jayant Yadav, who picked his first Test wicket, further inflicted damage when he trapped Moeen Ali (1) in front of the stumps. The umpire originally gave Ali not out, but the decision was overturned after Kohli opted for a DRS (Decision Review System). With fall of Ali’s wicket, England’s score read 80 for five.
Stokes and Bairstow then added unbeaten 23 runs for the sixth wicket as play was called off on day two. The duo lived dangerously as Indian spinners kept asking questions and managed to score 12 runs each.
