After showing resistance England openers, Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed, were finally dismissed as India move closer towards the victory. At stumps on day four, chasing 405, England were 87 for two. Cook and Hameed did a fabulous job and shared a half-century stand for the first wicket. England opening pair of Cook and Hameed put up a brave show as they kept Indian bowlers at bay for a significant time. After lunch, England began their response and both the openers looked positive. The openers then carried on their good work and stitched a fine half-century stand. The significant feature of this partnership was time taken by these two batsmen. Both Cook and Hameed looked clam and batted with intent. However, Cook was lucky to survive couple of decisions which went in his favour despite home side opting for the DRS.
Eventually, the breakthrough for India came when Ashwin removed Hameed. The ball kept low as the youngster was unable to keep it away and was struck in front of the wickets. With England looking to end day on a high, Jadeja struck in the last over of the day to provide his side a vital breakthrough. The spinner trapped England captain leg before wicket. Cook’s dismissal brought curtains to the day’s play. The England skipper scored 54 off 189 balls before being undone by a ball that kept little low.
Earlier, Stuart Broad and Adil Rashid combined to bundle out India for just 204 in their second innings. India resumed day’s play on 98 for three but England kept picking wickets at the regular intervals. Captain Virat Kohli was top scorer for India with 81. Jayant Yadav (27*) and Mohammad Shami (19) added valuable 42-run stand for the last wicket.
For England, Broad and Rashid finished with four wickets each while Moeen Ali and James Anderson chipped in with a wicket each.
The home side on final day now needs eight more wickets to go one up in the five-match series while England need 318 more runs. Joe Root remained unbeaten on five when play was called off. On final day, England will be hoping for a fine performance from the middle-order.
