India defeated England by 246 runs in second Test at Vizag to take lead in the five-match series. On day five, England resumed on 87 for two and were chasing 405 runs. The visitors lost five wickets in the first session of the day and then were bundled out post lunch. Spinners Ravi Ashwin and Jayant Yadav scalped three wickets each. It was always going to be a daunting task for England to chase 405 runs or even survive the day five. With pitch offering enough assistance for spinners, India were always in contention for a win. The day started on a positive note for India, when Ashwin sent back Ben Duckett for a duck.
Few overs later, Ravindra Jadeja had Moeen Ali (2) caught at leg slip as England slipped to 101 for four. With pressure creeping up, England batsmen were struggling. The visitors were further dented when spinner Yadav cleaned up Ben Stokes (6). In next over, Mohammad Shami removed Joe Root (25) and stamped India’s authority on the match. Shami then picked his second wicket he dismissed Adil Rashid (4). England then went into the lunch with score reading 142 for seven with Jonny Bairstow and Zafar Ansari at the crease.
It did not take India much time to pick remaining three wickets after the lunch break. Ashwin removed Zafar Ansari for a duck and then debutant Yadav picked two back to back wickets to help India win the match. Yadav removed Stuart Broad (5) and James Anderson (0) on consecutive deliveries to cap off an impressive Test debut.
The two sides now meet in the third Test match at Mohali from November 26. England tried to show resistance but eventually surrendered. Middle-order batsman Duckett has had poor outings thus far and likely to face axe for the Mohali Test.
