It was a day of complete domination by India as England continues to struggle in the fourth Test at Mumbai. At the close of play on day four, the visitors were at 182 for six, trialling by 49 runs in their second innings. India captain Virat Kohli notched his career’s third double hundred to help his side take a massive lead of 231 runs. The Indian skipper was well supported by Jayant Yadav, who became the first number nine batsman for India to score a Test century. India started the day with a lead of 51 runs in their kitty. The hosts, thanks to a 241-run stand for the eighth wicket between Kohli and Jayant, took India’s lead past 200 runs. During this stand, Kohli recorded double ton, third this year, to further dent England’s hopes of any comeback.
With Kohli scoring his double ton before the lunch, after the break, it was Jayant’s turn to reach the milestone. The youngster, playing in his third Test, registered his Test career’s maiden Test century. Both Kohli and Jayant were in sublime touch and made sure India tighten their grip over the match. The stand was finally broken when Jayant (104) was stumped off Adil Rashid’s delivery. Few overs later, looking to accelerate, India lost wicket of captain Kohli. The right-hander smashed his career-best 235 off 340 balls. His innings comprised of 25 fours and a six. India were then bowled for 631 with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (9) the last wicket to fell.
With the ball in hand, Bhuvneshwar then struck with his second delivery as he trapped first innings centurion Keaton Jennings for a golden duck. Things got worse for England when Ravindra Jadeja struck twice in two overs. Jadeja first removed England captain Cook (18) and then dismissed Moeen Ali for a duck. With wickets falling at one end, Joe Root looked a batsman of different sorts. The right-hander combined with Jonny Bairstow shared 92-run stand for the fourth wicket and steadied England innings.
However, Jayant provided India with a breakthrough when he has Root adjudged leg befoe wickets. Root, who looked fluent for his 77, fell at a time when England needed a big partnership.
Late in the day, India then found two wickets in quick succession. Ben Stokes (18) and nightwatchman Jake Ball (2) were the two batsmen dismissed. Both fell to Ravi Ashwin.
With England still trailing by 49 runs, India will try to press for victory as soon as possible by picking the remaining wickets. However, Bairstow is batting on 50, and he will have Jos Buttler as his partner on day five morning.
