Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has leaked never-heard-before instances from the iconic ‘Shirt Opening’ act at Lords. Ganguly split the beans in the latest episode of ‘Breakfast With Champions’. Bengal-born Sourav Ganguly goes on to say how he got charged up by the entire event. He also goes on to reveal how VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh who were around him and tried to stop him failed because he was not in the mood to listen to anyone.
During the conversation, Ganguly reveals when Harbhajan asked him ‘ab main kya karu’, the skipper turned back and said, “tu bhi khol le”, which means you too open it.
During the course of the interview, he later admitted he feels a little embarrassed about the incident now. “But I am also embarrassed about the incident. My daughter once asked, ‘Why did you do that? Is it necessary to do that in cricket?’ And I had to tell her that ‘No, I did it once by mistake’. Somethings things happen in life in which you do not have any control,” he said.
It was a historic moment under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly that India was winning an ODI tri-series in the UK. Chasing a daunting 327 to win in the finals, India managed to scrape through with three balls to spare. At a certain point in time, India was 146/6 and looked out of the game. But it was the heroics of young Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif that saw India through. Singh hit a belligerent 69 off 63 balls, and Kaif remained unbeaten on 87 off 75 to create history.
The scenes would still be fresh in the hearts of the fans. An Indian captain taking off his shirt in the iconic Lords balcony was the unthinkable then. Lords, considered to be the Mecca of cricket was the epitome of royal in all sense. Hence, it was incredible to see him do that at the same spot from where Kapil Dev lifted the 1983 Prudential Cup.
