India continued to dominate the show against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur. The hosts after resuming day’s play on 159 for one declared their innings on 377 for five, setting New Zealand a target of 434 runs. Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara were the two overnight batsmen as India resumed the play on penultimate day. New Zealand did well early on to build some pressure and made it tough for the batsmen to score runs freely. However, Vijay and Pujara then found their way to help India build the lead.

Mitchell Santner then removed Vijay (76) to break the 133-run stand between him and Pujara. Captain Virat Kohli then came out to bat but he did not last long as Mark Craig accounted for his wicket. Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma then shared 49-run partnership for the fifth wicket to help India’s lead go over 320 runs. Rahane (40) fell to Santner with India’s total reading 277 for five. It was then the unbeaten stand hundred-run stand between Rohit and Jadeja that swelled India’s lead to over 400. The two showed no intent of scoring runs quickly and batted slowly to accumulate runs. The duo in the process registered their respective half-centuries before the Indian innings was declared. Rohit and Jadeja remained unbeaten 68 and 50 respectively. After the declaration, tea break was taken.

After tea, New Zealand began their chase and were put under pressure by Ravi Ashwin, who removed both the openers in his second over. At the time of publishing this report, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were at the crease battling against the spin of Ashwin and Jadeja.
