India vs New Zealand 2019: Eager to make a mark in the coveted blue jersey, young batsman Shubman Gill is leaving no stone unturned to continue his rampaging batting form ahead of the series opener against New Zealand in Napier. After a mighty impressive domestic season, Gill looks in fine touch in the practice session ahead of the opening ODI. Team India will take on Kiwis in a five-match ODI series followed by three T20Is.
The 19-year old Gill was drafted into India’s ODI setup in place of suspended KL Rahul, who had to return to the country. BCCI suspended Rahul and Hardik Pandya in the wake of their controversial remarks on a popular talk show.

The 19-year-old Gill first rose to prominence with his Player of the Tournament performance in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2018, also held in New Zealand, where he played a key role in India’s title-winning run. He rapidly rose through the ranks since then and is now on the cusp of an India cap in just over a year since his first-class debut in November 2017. Doing well in the recent New Zealand tour of India A, it was an easy job for the selectors to consider him for the senior side.
The Punjab-born batsman has been in prime form with the bat as well, having notched up scores of 91, 69*, 148 and 268 in his last five first-class games and averages 77.28 in nine matches. His List A average of 47.78 from 36 games is worth mentioning.
“It is a big advantage [to be picked for the New Zealand tour]. I played well there in the U-19 World Cup and now again I have got the opportunity,” Gill told PTI after being picked in the Indian squad.
“As I have done well there, I can say that there isn’t much adjustment needed in the technique. If I get an opportunity, I will have just need to handle the pressure that comes with playing for India. Mentally, it will be different for sure but I am ready,” he added.
