Team India and South Africa may look to ring in some changes to their playing 11 as they face off in the second ODI match at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday. KL Rahul’s Indians are 1-0 up in the three-match series with a 17-run win over the Proteas in the first ODI in Ranchi on Sunday.
Indians had to take a tough call to leave out wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant from the playing 11 for the first game. Pant is making a comeback into the ODI side after last playing in the 50-over format more than a year back in Sri Lanka.
But Pant’s return will mean that Team India will have to drop either Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad from the Playing 11. In order to accommodate Jaiswal at the top to partner Rohit Sharma, Gaikwad had to move down to No. 4 in the line-up in Ranchi and fell to a brilliant catch by Dewald Brevis for only 8.
Gaikwad is averaging over 57 in the List A and many believe it would be unfair on him to be dropped after only one outing. The rest of the batting order looks secure with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and skipper KL Rahul showing top form in Ranchi.
South Africa, on the other hand, will be making a couple of changes with regular skipper Temba Bavuma and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj returning to side after being rested for 1st ODI. Bavuma will be expected to replace Ryan Rickleton with Quinton de Kock moving up to open the batting with Aiden Markram while Maharaj will come in place of Prenelan Subrayen.
Both De Kock and Rickleton had been dismissed for ducks in the first ODI by Indian pacer Harshit Rana in the second over of their chase.
