Total of 12 wickets tumbled on the opening day of Mohali Test between India and South Africa. 10 belonged to home side while South Africa lost two wickets for 28 runs when play was called off on day one. Opting to bat, India were dismissed for paltry 201. It all started when Vernon Philander removed Shikhar Dhawan in the second over of the day. The left-hander played a lose stroke and was caught at first slip by Hashim Amla. Also Check- India vs South Africa 1st Test Day 1- As it happened 

Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara then took control of the innings and stitched a half-century stand. The duo added 63 for second wicket. Afterwards, it was Dean Elgar who sprung the surprise. Elgar removed Pujara to open the gates for his side once again. In next over, Kagiso Rabada, who is playing his first Test, removed Indian captain Virat Kohli to make it 65 for three.

Elgar then came back for his second spell after the lunch and scalped two wickets in his consecutive overs. He removed Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha. With wickets falling at one end, Vijay completed his 12th Test fifty. Also Read- South Africa trail India by 173 runs

Simon Harmer the picked the prized wicket of Vijay who fell for well-made 75 and India were tottering at 140 for six.  Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin tried to fight back with a 40 odd run stand but India were eventually bowled out for 201.

Elgar picked four wickets while Tahir and Philander scalped two wickets each. Rabada and Harmer chipped in with a wicket each.

Responding to India’s 201, South Africa lost two early wickets. Ashwin removed Stiaan van Zyl while Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Faf du Plessis. South Africa trail by 173 runs with Hashim Amla and Dean Elgar batting on 13 and 9 respectively.
