Ravichandran Ashwin’s five-wicket haul helped India take a small 1st innings lead of 17 runs against South Africa in the 1st Test at Mohali. Responding to India’s 201, South Africa were bowled out for 184. At close of play day two India were 125 for two with Cheteshwar Pujara and Captain Virat Kohli batting on 63 and 11 respectively. Ashwin was well-supported by spin partners- Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra, who shared the other five wickets between them.

India then once again got off to a jittery start when Vernon Philander removed Shikhar Dhawan for a duck. The left-hander was out without adding a run in first innings as well and thus got pair against his name.

Murali Vijay and Pujara then continued to build a partnership and gave India the momentum. The duo added 86 for second-wicket before Imran Tahir removed Vijay. The right-hander fell short of his half-century by just three runs. Kohli then joined Pujara and the two led India to safety when play ended on day two with overall lead of 142.
