MS Dhoni could not pull off a last ball win for India, in the process West Indies won the 1st T20 match by 1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series. Put into bat, West Indies were magnificent as they posted 245 for 6 in 20 overs. Evin Lewis made 100 off 49 balls and Johnson Charles scored 79 off 33 balls. India had Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged 2 scalps. (Evin Lewis clubs Stuart Binny for five sixes in an over)
As far as the chase was concerned, it was quite thrilling right down to the wire. KL Rahul made 110 not out of 51 balls and was ably supported by Rohit Sharma who made 62 off 28 balls. Dhoni made 43 off 25 balls. It was Darren Bravo who got the wicket of Dhoni on the last ball of the match. Bravo also finished the match with 2 scalps. (Pakistan cricket fans made fun of Virat Kohli after India lost number one Test spot to their team)
We have to focus on Dhoni here who had a miss on the last ball like we have not thought until it actually transpired. He is the man who is our famed finisher, best remembered for clubbing the famous shot that had India win the 2011 World Cup. But it did not quite go to script for the wonder boy whose one of a kind life is now a part of a soon to be released Bollywood flick.
How he missed it, we could have figured out only if we had not seen those numerous finishes by his magical blade until now. And one has to talk about Bravo who really did everything as far as the last over was concerned. There was no way India were winning it but for Bravo who snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. It was an over for the ages and would be remembered for a long time.
Of course tomorrow’s match is key and it will be interesting how India shape up because this is a T20 series after a long Test series in which India earned victory under Virat Kohli. Dhoni on the other hand has much pressure on him as far as this T20 series is concerned considering that he is the man in focus as the skipper.
One has to say that Sunday may well be a defining day for Dhoni because with little success in recent times, you may see Kohli leading in all formats sooner than later. This is perhaps not just another short T20 series but a series that may decide the fate of captain cool as far as the future is concerned. A win tomorrow may pave the way for him to have more captaincy opportunities and a loss may not do much great as far as the future is concerned.
West Indies set the tempo of the match from the first ball and it was quite remarkable that we saw India maintain the momentum till the last ball. One will also say that we will sadly remember this match for Dhoni missing it out when it really mattered. How India comes back on Sunday will show how much ticker is left on a long travel trip for India.
