John Campbell and Shai Hope both hit unbeaten fifties as West Indies finished the third day of the second Test at 173 for 2 against India on Sunday.
After being asked to bat again following their first-innings total of 248, Campbell (87* from 145 balls) and Hope (66* from 103 balls) put on a solid 138-run partnership. Their effort reduced India’s lead to 97 runs by the time play ended for the day.
Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav took five wickets with his spin bowling, helping India dismiss the West Indies for 248 in their first innings.
India 1st Innings: 518/5 declared in 134.2 overs
West Indies: 248 all out and 173/2 in 49 overs (John Campbell 87*, Shai Hope 66*; Mohammed Siraj 1/10, Washington Sundar 1/44)
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Shai Hope remains unbeaten on 66 from 103 balls, while John Campbell is not out on 87 from 145 deliveries. Together, they’ve added 138 runs from 208 balls. West Indies can be pleased — they’ve finally had a good session. It’s been a strong partnership between Hope and Campbell, but the real challenge will come in the first 30 minutes tomorrow. India still has a lead of 97 runs, and if West Indies want to even start putting pressure back on India, they’ll need to score at least 150 more.
So, despite all the hard work so far, they are still far from being in a safe position or thinking about saving the match. Still, progress takes time — and for a team that once ruled Test cricket, today was a small but promising step forward.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Campbell and Hope have added 135 runs together from 203 balls for the third wicket — a big boost for the West Indies. On the other side, India are trying something different with their bowling. Yashasvi Jaiswal is now coming on to bowl. So far, in his brief Test career, he has only delivered six balls in total.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: A single on the second ball of the 42nd over, bowled by Jadeja, brings up Shai Hope’s first Test half-century in 31 innings. Before this, no West Indies batter had reached fifty in the entire series and now, two have done it in the same stand. Hope is known as one of the top players in one-day internationals, but his Test performances haven’t really taken off since his amazing hundreds in England back in 2017. Maybe this knock will mark a fresh start for him in the longer format.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Sundar comes in to bowl instead of Kuldeep in the 36th over. Campbell is batting now and has scored 65 runs from 105 balls, while Shai Hope has 37 runs from 58 balls. The West Indies are currently behind by 151 runs. India doesn’t need to worry just yet. Everyone knows that losing one wicket now could cause the team to fall apart quickly.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Campbell handles Bumrah’s over with ease. From the other side, Kuldeep keeps bowling, and on his third delivery, Hope gets a good one to play. He goes back and hits it through the cover region for a boundary. Hope is now on 37 from 55 balls, while Campbell has made 64 from 102 deliveries. Bumrah will bowl again, this time coming from around the stumps.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Campbell and Hope have now added 79 runs together in 105 balls. It’s a bit unfortunate that this is their final innings of the series. Just as the West Indies are starting to adjust to the playing conditions in India, the matches are coming to an end. It would have been exciting to see how they performed if there were one or two more Test matches. The last time West Indies played a four-match Test series was at home against India in 2016. Their most recent five-match Test series was way back in 2009.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: India has completed 30 overs, but Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t bowled yet. Nitish Kumar Reddy hasn’t been used either. Ravindra Jadeja has already finished his 10 overs, and Washington Sundar has bowled nine — both have done most of the work in the hot Delhi weather. Kuldeep Yadav has just finished his fifth over.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: After getting lucky with a few LBW appeals in recent overs, John Campbell got to his fifty with a four. He and his batting partner are beginning to play more confidently now, as nearly every over has a boundary. Both Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are being hit around the ground.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: It feels like a repeat! Washington Sundar gets hit for a boundary by Campbell, and the very next ball brings a big shout for LBW. But the umpire says no. Still, just like before, Shubman Gill listens to Sundar and decides to go for a review. However, the ball had landed outside the line again. The tracking showed it would have hit the middle stump, but since the umpire had given it not out, the original decision stayed.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Score: Washington Sundar strikes just before tea, bowling Athanaze with a beauty that turns past the edge and hits off-stump. It’s Sundar’s first wicket of the match.
