Imran Khan, who will be taking the oath as the prime minister of Pakistan on August 18, was on Friday gifted a bat signed by the Indian cricket team. The Pakistani media has run a report quoting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Javed saying that the cricketer-turned-politician would take oath on August 18. It was being speculated that Khan would take the oath prior to Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations on August 14. In its report, Geo TV mentioned that Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain has postponed his foreign tours for the time being to remain present in the country to administer the oath of the new Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Pakistan went to polls on July 25 and the PTI had emerged as the single largest party with 116 seats after the Election Commission of Pakistan released the complete results for 270 of 272 National Assembly (NA) constituencies.
PTI on Monday had formally announced Khan as the new Pakistan Prime Ministerial candidate. Local media also said that from India, cricketers Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu had been invited for the oath-taking ceremony.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar has already stated that he will take the government’s “ok” before going to attend Imran’s oath-taking ceremony. “I would like to take our government’s OK, take their view, opinion whether I should travel there even if there is a day when I am able to go,” Gavaskar had said on the invitation to India Today.
