Indian Premier League 2019: It came as a big shock when Delhi Daredevils did not retain ace opener Gautam Gambhir ahead of the player auctions. Gambhir has led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory a couple of times and at the fag end of his career, he is still in good form with the bat in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. With the amount of experience he brings to the plate, he would have been a certainty but that was not to be. So who are the teams that can consider Gautam Gambhir during the player auctions slated next month?

Chennai Super Kings: The franchise was criticised last year for picking players above the age of 30, but the MS Dhoni-led outfit proved their critics wrong as they went on to lift the crown for the third time. They have Shane Watson, who has retired from international cricket but showed prolific form as an opener of the CSK team to help them batter SunRisers Hyderabad in the finale last season. He is the power hitter and CSK could look at Gautam Gambhir to play the sheet anchor’s role along with him. Gambhir is 37, but he reads the game well and knows when to anchor and when to attack and that could be one reason CSK could consider his services.

SunRisers Hyderabad: With David Warner coming back after a season and Shikhar Dhawan missing, Gambhir could be the ideal pick for them at the auctions if they are looking at someone solid to company Warner. They have Kane Williamson coming at three, their top order would look settled. It will be interesting to see if Tom Moody and SRH bid for him at the auctions.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Why not KKR? He knows the setup and has led the franchise to two titles and has always formed a good pair at the top with Robin Utthapa. With the kind of money KKR still has in their purse (Rs 15.20 cr), it will not be surprising if the eastern franchise bids for him.
