After the hard fought league stage, four teams have qualified for Indian Premier League 2017 (IPL) playoffs. Mumbai Indians, Rising Pune Supergiant, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders are the ones who advance to next round while Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils, Gujarat Lions and Royal Challengers Bangalore miss out this season.
While Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders had already qualified for playoffs, Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab fought for the fourth spot in the penultimate league stage match. Steve Smith-led Pune Supergiant registered an impressive nine-wicket win over Kings XI. Put to bat, KXIP were bundled out for a paltry score of 73 runs in 15.5 overs. RPS then chased down the target in 12 overs with nine wickets in hand. The victory helped Pune jump from fourth place to second on the IPL 2017 points table.
With RPS taking the second spot, Maharastra Derby in the Qualifier 1 is now confirmed as they will face table-toppers Mumbai Indians. While MI and RPS will meet in the Qualifier 1, SRH and KKR take on each other in the Eliminator. The winner of MI vs RPS match that is Qualifier 1 will proceed directly to final. The loser of Qualifier 1 will face the winner of SRH vs KKR Eliminator match. Teams finishing first and second on the points table get the second shot at the finals in case they lose the Qualifier 1.
Interestingly, Mumbai and Pune have faced each other twice this season, and on both the occasions RPS have emerged victorious.
