New Delhi: Day 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 auction at the ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru on Saturday was full of surprises. India opener KL Rahul and middle-order batsman Manish Pandey became one the most expensive buys of the ongoing 11th edition, bagging bumper deals of Rs 11 crore each. Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga, Ishant Sharma, Joe Root, Mitchell Johnson, among others went unsold in the first round while Ben Stokes emerged as the most expensive player as he was snapped for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore by Rajasthan Royals (RR). Pandey, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last season, was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad while Rahul was snapped up by Kings XI Punjab. Meanwhile, Australian middle-order batsman Chris Lynn stayed with KKR for Rs 9.60 crore. They also bought Mitchell Starc. Glenn Maxwell was taken by Delhi Daredevils (DD) for Rs 9 crore. On day two of the auction, the teams will be looking complete their squads. A franchise needs to have a minimum of 18 players. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have already 16 players while Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have purchased 15 and 14 players respectively. Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab have picked 11, 12 and 10 players respectively so far. Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have picked least number of players so far at nine each. (With ANI inputs).
