On paper, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had one of the strongest teams going into the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Unfortunately, this did not translate into success on the field. SRH could not match their 2024 runners-up finish and ended the 2025 season well outside the top four.
A new year brings new hope. Given the team’s talent, SRH looks capable of proving that 2025 was just a bad year. The first step will be the mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, which is happening today, where SRH may need to strengthen their squad.
The team is full of talent, but it still lacked some balance. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma remain top-class openers. Heinrich Klaasen, who has retired from international cricket, continues to be the strongest batter in the middle order, while Pat Cummins is a motivating captain despite dealing with injuries. Nitish Kumar Reddy has also become a more experienced player now.
SRH also has some exciting local batting talent coming up. Earlier this year, Aniket Verma showed his skills and this season R Smaran who plays domestic cricket for Karnataka but couldn’t play for SRH, he has been scoring runs easily. However, the bowling side still has several clear weaknesses.
For the IPL 2026 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad have Rs 25.50 crore left to spend and 10 empty spots in their squad, including 2 for overseas players. This gives them good money to go after important players in the upcoming auction.
