Both the teams have clashed in the final of ISL opening season also and it was a late goal from midfielder Mohammed Rafique that handed Atletico de Kolkata the inaugural Indian Super League title in 2014.
The loss shattered the heart of Kerala and now when these two teams are meeting again in the finals, Kerala will eye for a revenge and aim to clinch the ISL season 3, trophy. Though, Steve Coppell was quick to sweep aside talk of his side seeking vengeance for the painful loss in 2014. “A lot has changed. This is a totally different competition. A sense of revenge won’t drive us. What will drive us on is the team spirit and the determination to win the final,” he stated.
Both the teams were at top of their game in the knock-out round. While Kolkata managed to overpower Mumbai 3-2 through normal play in, Kerala drew 2-2 with Delhi Dynamos and won 3-0 on penalties, in the semi-finals. Kerala have been on a roll in Kochi having won their last six matches there but the fact that their only loss at the venue this season came against Kolkata is also certain to prey on their minds.
ATK, on the other hand, certainly have an advantage as their star players would have had at least a week’s rest given that Jose Molina didn’t pick as many as nine players in the second leg of the play-off in Mumbai. Helder Postiga, Iain Hume, Kinshuk Debnath, Prabir Das and some of the other regular stars were rested which would see that they are in their best possible physical shape on Sunday.
Also, visiting side hold a clear benefit against their hosts when it comes to creativity in the middle of the park. Visitors will also have the psychological edge over Kerala as Atletico de Kolkata have the credit of being the only team to have won in Kochi this season, thanks to a deflected effort by Javi Lara.
