Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, who is currently on assignment in India as Mumbai Indians fielding coach in the Indian Premier League, was blessed with a baby girl on Thursday. The 45-year-old and his wife Melanie Jeanne have christened their newborn girl as ‘India’. Jonty broke the news to the world via a tweet to Mumbai Indians’ official Twitter handle. He also confirmed the baby girl is named India Jeanne Rhodes and both mother and daughter are in perfect health.

The peculiarity about the birth of his daughter is that Melanie delivered the baby by the process of water birth. The delivery took place at a hospital in Santa Cruz, western Mumbai on Thursday afternoon. The assumption behind water birth is that since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, thus birthing into a similar environment makes it gentler for both baby and mother. Twitteratis got into the act and while humour took the centre-stage all but one joke mocked South Africa.

Jonty is clearly having the time of his life. But the same can’t be said of his IPL Team Mumbai Indians, who are sitting bottom of the points table with just two points from five matches. The fielding legend’s fortune has definitely brightened. Will India prove to be a lucky charm for Rohit Sharma and co? Only time will tell!
