Regarded as the best fielder the game has ever seen – Jonty Rhodes has named his favourite Indian fielder of all time and his pick will surprise most of the fans. In a recent interview with world cricket body – ICC, Rhodes revealed his top-five fielders of all time. His list included players from Australia, England, and South Africa, however, at the number one spot is Indian middle-order batsman Suresh Raina.
Rhodes, who retired from international cricket in 2003, said that he has been a massive fan of India’s dynamic cricketer – Suresh Raina. He said he was a Raina fan ever seen the UP player starting playing international cricket.
“I have been massive fan of Suresh Raina, for forever; ever since he started playing,” Rhodes told ICC website.
Rhodes went on to reason that Raina mostly fields in tough Indian conditions and never hesitates in going for the ball, which was his own way of going about fielding.
“I know what the conditions of the fields are in India, and every time he practices, every time he dives, it’s gonna be so much of heat. He doesn’t even give a second hesitation of should I have dived or shouldn’t have dived,” Rhodes added.
“He goes for the ball which pretty much what my philosophy is, ‘if you don’t go, you’ll never know’ and he has done that. He has taken great catches in the slips and in the outfield and in the circle. I have loved watching Suresh Raina. He is my number one fielder.”
Coming in at No.2 in Rhodes list is South African counterpart AB de Villiers followed by Paul Collingwood, his SA teammate Herschelle Gibbs and Australia’s Andrew Symonds.
Raina has been missing out from international cricket lately due to his ordinary run of form. Last year, the UP batsman made a comeback during England tour but failed to create an impact. With IPL nearing, hope Raina gets back to good form for defending champions – Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
