Juventus Football Club Blasted For Revolting Tweets on Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Controversy
Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of rape by an American woman, Kathryn Mayorga alleged that he raped her, threatened her and bought her silence in 2009, these claims were published by German magazine Der Spiegel and it was denied by the footballer. Juventus FC's statement on the matter caused an outrage on social media.
Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of rape by an American woman, Kathryn Mayorga alleged that he raped her, threatened her and bought her silence in 2009, these claims were published by German magazine Der Spiegel and it was denied and called “blatantly illegal” by the Portuguese international and Juventus football Club striker.
The five-time ‘World’s best footballer’ title winner strongly denied the accusations of a woman, who claims that the Portuguese forward raped her in 2009.
The denial of Ronaldo, who joined Juventus in the past summer transfer window for 112 million euros (Rupees 951 crores approx.) after spending nine years at Real Madrid, came after the German magazine Der Spiegel revealed the identity of the woman; American model Kathryn Mayorga.
His new club Juventus although reacted late on the issue, after matters had come serious media scrutiny. However, their response was not the most sensible from a neutral point of view, which should have ideally upheld the morals against sexual abuse and this caused an outrage on social media.
Heres what the Italian club tweeted in support of Cristiano Ronaldo:
(1)Cristiano Ronaldo has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus. (2) The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion.”

The Italian league table toppers faced the social media heat after posting these controversial tweets which may have implied that since the alleged incident took place ten years ago and the star footballer has a commendable attitude among his footballing colleagues, the accusations can be deemed irrelevant regardless of the nature of truth. There is no doubt over the fact that what Juventus FC intended was right, but using the right words to convey a sensitive issue as this was clearly a lost art.
Here’s how the fans reacted:
PHEW! If the allegations are true & he’s a rapist, then it’s good to know he’s a polite and well liked rapist.

Completely irrelevant and utterly tone-deaf.
Pathetic stuff from Juventus. pic.twitter.com/2gkSDG8ak1

This is such a disgraceful tweet- the implicit suggestion that both his attitude to football and his playing ability are relevant to (or even should excuse him from) being an alleged rapist is horrific

Juventus have chosen obfuscation and distraction rather than denial re Ronaldo rape investigation. The idea that an athlete’s “professionalism and dedication” is a relevant consideration in a sexual assault case is absolutely toxic pic.twitter.com/AElHFnMcBE

Don’t think it’s helpful to offer opinions on serious allegations – particularly on social media – but that Juventus statement is abhorrent.
‘Allegations do not change our opinion that he is a great champion’ – this is bigger than sporting achievement, for goodness sake.

Cristiano Ronaldo denied allegations:
“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in,” the 33-year-old forward tweeted.
“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense,” he stressed.
