Adding one more medal to his tally, Uttarakhand’s Lakshya Sen secured the gold medal for India in the Senior India International Series Badminton tournament which was held at the Sports Authority of India Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad.
Lakshya Sen who is just 16 years of age and hails from Almora, overcome Malaysian player, Ji Jiya Li and defeated him by 11-13, 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 to win a hard-fought four-set title match on Sunday. Prior to that, Sen defeated tournament’s number one seed Shreyansh Jaiswal in the round of semi-final.
Besides Lakshya’s gold medal, Kuhoo Garg who also belongs to Uttarakhand, bagged bronze medal for India in the mixed doubles category. After their success in the tournament, Lakshya and Kuhoo were congratulated and praised by Ashok Kumar who is President of Uttarakhand Badminton Association.
Significantly, this was Lakshya’s second major title win in last two months as he also won the All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh in last week of September. However, the Sunday’s win was his first major international title in the senior men category.
Prior to Senior India International Series, Lakshya Sen won All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh in last week of September, though India International Series is his first major international title in the senior men category.
According to BS Mankoti, Secretary of Uttarakhand Badminton Association, “Lakshya has become the first badminton player from Uttarakhand to win a gold medal in any international badminton tournament in senior category. Even Kuhoo got the bronze medal in the tournament and both are from Uttarakhand.”
After getting trained by his father DK Sen who is Sports Authority of India (SAI) badminton coach at Almora, Lakshya Sen currently trains at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru and his brother, Chirag Sen is also one of the trainees there.
