New Delhi: With just six wins from 17 matches, Argentina are at the sixth place in South America World Cup qualifiers and are in danger of missing the World Cup finals spot to be held next year in Russia.
For the uninitiated, the top four countries from South America qualify directly for Russia with the fifth-placed team entering the intercontinental playoffs to play New Zealand.
In a must-win contest, Argentina faces Ecuador on Wednesday. The Lionel Messi-led side needs a win and that will guarantee a play-off place. If all goes well the victory against Ecuador might even help them qualify directly for the World Cup, but for that to happen both Colombia and Chile should lose their respective matches against Peru and Brazil.
In case of a draw, Argentina will need other results to go in their favour as well. And if the two-time World Champions lose against Ecuador then they will be almost eliminated which means we won’t be able to see Messi at the 2018 World Cup.
Brazil have already qualified and sit comfortably on top. Second-placed Uruguay needs just a draw at home against Bolivia to qualify for World Cup. Chile, Colombia and Peru are at third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
So, with three places for the direct qualification up for grabs fans will be excited to catch the final round of games.
