Lionel Messi has scored 21 goals in El Clasico matches, more than any other player during head to head battles between the two teams. In recent years, it has turned into a Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo battle of sorts, with the Portuguese maverick trailing the Argentinian by six goals. Messi has made it  a habit to turn up for these games and almost certainly delivers for the side. He has done everything a footballer possibly can in this fixture; going past 3-4 people like they were training ground sticks, direct free-kicks, tap-ins, pin-point through balls, the 28-year-old has pulled everything off. Last time round, Barcelona thumped their arch-rivals 4-0 but Messi came on only at the hour mark. Despite that, he made an impression on the game. Just a couple of months ago, Messi won the Ballon d’Or for an unprecedented fifth time and is going ever so strong. Barcelona won a treble for the second time last year and they are in contention yet again. They lead the league by 10 points against Atletico Madrid, who are in second place. These days, Messi is not regarded as the only magician of Barca. He has Neymar and Luis Suarez in tow and the goals keep coming in. The floodgates for Messi opened with a simple tap-in off a rebound. At 19, he scored a hat-trick and has never stopped since. Despite not scoring a goal, Messi played a significant hand in the 5-0 decimation at the Camp Nou in 2010. His mazy run later that season in the Champions League is another one for the archives.

Things have only gotten better from there with every passing season. In two consecutive El Clasico games in 2012, which was part of the Spanish SuperCoppa, Messi scored two direct free-kicks to leave World Cup winning goalkeeper Iker Casillas completely embarrassed.
