Sonu Yogendra Jalan (41), seems to be the biggest name coming out of the recently sprung IPL bettng scam, involving big names from Bollywood like Arbaaz Khan. On May 16, the anti-extortion cell raided a building in Dombivali, which was found out to be the epicenter of IPL betting racket. That is where it got busted to start with, in the following days more arrests were made, finally leading to Arbaaz Khan. Apparently, Sonu told Thane Police Crime Branch that Arbaaz was betting big, and there was a tiff between the two for a sum of Rs 3 Cr, which the actor was not paying.

So, who is Sonu Jalan and what do we know about the ringleader of IPL betting scam?

Early days: 

According to his Facebook page, he is born and raised in Mumbai. He also did his schooling in Mumbai from Shree Nutan Vidya Mandir in Mallad. He has a sister and she is a singer. He is very protective about her, like all brothers are.

Fixing International Matches:

Sonu Jalan, along with another bookie in Mumbai, Prem Taneja and his business partner Jr. Calcutta, fixed a Test match played between Sri Lanka and Australia in 2016. To fix this match, the three had gone to Sri Lanka and fixed the pitch curator Varanvira. In that match, 21 wickets fell on the same day. Bookie Prem Taneja is the same person whom the Mumbai crime branch arrested with Vindu Dara Singh case in 2013 in the IPL fixing and betting row. According to sources in Thane, Taneja had also met Sonu Jalan with one or two times Vindu Dara Singh.

Fixing Pakistan Veteran’s Match:

Sonu Jalan did not stop there, he even had the audacity to fix a domestic match of Pakistan Veteran cricketers in 2016. To fix this match, Sonu met the team owner Hanif Malik and a Bollywood actor in Dubai. Hanif Malik is a UK-based UK based businessman. This Bollywood actor who was in the meeting is supposed to be from Mumbai’s Bandra region. Sonu, also has a sting video of this actor with which he has been constantly blackmailing this actor.

Sonu’s D-Company Connect:

Sonu works closely with the D-Company, run by Dawood Ibrahim. Sonu was apparently in close touch with two of Dawood’s aides in Pakistan, one a superintendent and the other a doctor. In India, Pakistan, Dubai and Gulf countries, the entire collection of betting markets went to the two people known as Anees Ibrahim and Shakeel. Apart from this, Sonu was in constant connect with Rais Siddiqui and Anil Kothari alias Anil Tunda in Dubai. Both Rais and Anil operate betting for D company in Dubai. They have all met in Dubai many times.

The King-size Lifestyle:

Sonu has 3 luxurious flats in a multi-storey building in Mumbai. The monthly rent of one flat is Rs. 1,60,000. It also has many expensive luxury carts. He has also invested in many benami properties (Unknown properties). According to a diary recovered from Thane police from Sonu’s house, one season of IPL (2018) Sonu’s betting collection amounts to about 500 crores.

Note: He apparently churned a sum of Rs 10 Cr during the recent IPL 2018 Final played between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
