Jonny Bairstow cruelly missed out on his century as he was LBW on 99 in the first innings. Ben Stokes (58) and Joe Root (52) played their part enabling England reach 362 runs in their first innings.

Ali also showed his batting capability after he rescued England by scoring a gritty and unbeaten 75 runs to help England reach 243.
Morne Morkel (4/41) and Duanne Olivier (3/38) shone for the visitors.
South African batsmen were poor throughout their batting innings as no batsmen barring Hashim Amla (83) and skipper Faf du Plessis (61) could not reach their half century.
