Fanatic people bashed Mohammed Shami for posting an image with his wife who sported a sleeveless gown. Shami, a reputed fast bowler for the Indian cricket team, sit with his wife Hasin Jahan putting his right arm on her shoulder.
Now after having a look on the image many of them used their facebook account to threaten Shami with religious bigotry. However, this is nothing new in India. Radicalism and battle between two religions are common in India. But as this time a cricketer is facing a hit of people of his community as his wife wore a sleeveless gown.
With no time of posting an image with his wife, Facebook users posted derogatory comments and criticising for uploading an image with his wife without hijab and for not ‘covering’ her properly. People posted comments like, “sharam karo sar aap ek muslim ho bibi ko parde me rakho” (Be ashamed Sir, you’re a Muslim and you should keep your wife behind curtains). The social media, which have become a platform for breaking news, also make people stay connected with their stars. While surfing the internet we have found many abusive languages used to bash Shami and his wife. This is not new; recently boxer Mohammad Amir’s wife also exposed how his husband’s family tortures her for wearing western clothes. In the internet, many women cutting across the communities endure abusive words, sexual harassment.
In recent time Indian shuttler Jwala Gutta revealed her pain while talking about her presence on the social media, “The people passing such statements have an advantage, you know; they are hiding behind a mask, to make these comments. I’m quite sure in real life, they will never have the guts to come forward and tell me such things. In fact, they will refer to me as ‘Jwala Maam’ and even ask for a selfie or something. Over time, I have realised that it’s become a sort of entertainment for people, where they make such comments to attract more attention or get more likes, without realising how sensitive it might be.” (Pakistani team lost a domestic match due to unavailability of printers and internet at the dressing room)
However, Jwala Gutta and Mohammad Shami are not the first and last. Cricketer Dinesh Karthik’s wife Dipika Pallikal, a champion squash player also faced the same problem along with Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, and Tania Sachdev.
