New Delhi: The Asia Cup 2025 is being considered the most controversial tournament ever. It all started when India refused to shake hands with the Pakistani team after the group stage match. The matter didn’t end there—the controversy continued into the final match, where India and Pakistan faced off. Despite India’s victory, the team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi. Following this, the trophy was locked in the ACC headquarters in Dubai, and strict instructions were given that it would not be moved anywhere without the chairman’s permission.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strongly objected to Naqvi’s behavior. According to reports, the board is now preparing to raise the issue at next month’s ICC meeting. There is a growing buzz in cricket circles that a proposal to remove Naqvi from his position as an ICC Director could be put forward, including taking strong action against him.
BCCI sources have clarified that Naqvi did not have the authority to present the trophy to the Indian team, as India hosted the tournament. Therefore, his personal possession of the trophy and failure to deliver it to the BCCI is considered a violation of the rules. It is reported that Naqvi left with the trophy after the final ceremony, and it has remained locked in the ACC office ever since.
The entire Asia Cup was surrounded by India-Pakistan tensions. Players from both teams avoided shaking hands during matches and were seen making political innuendos. Naqvi himself also made several political statements on social media, further exacerbating the situation. Naqvi is not only the Chairman of the PCB but also the Home Minister of Pakistan, further complicating the matter.
According to sources, Naqvi has given clear instructions that the trophy will only be handed over if he is personally present. Nearly two weeks after India’s victory, the trophy remains safely in the ACC office, and the controversy over it shows no signs of abating.
