There was pin-drop silence around the JSCA Stadium once local hero MS Dhoni was cleaned up by Adam Zampa for 26 off 42 balls. Chasing a stiff 314, a lot depended on Dhoni and with it probably being his last international appearance at Ranchi the expectations were huge. Zampa tossed the ball up and Dhoni looked to bang it down the ground, he probably came down too hard and missed the line of the ball. The ball took the inside edge of his bat and rolled onto the wicket. Once Dhoni was out, the crowd went absolutely quiet. One felt Australia had built pressure around Dhoni, and the former skipper wanted to break the shackles falling prey for it. Ranchi has not been one of Dhoni’s favourite hunting ground and the 26 he scored in the 3rd ODI was his highest.

Here is his dismissal:

Meanwhile, Kohli slammed his 41st ton and gave hopes of an Indian win. But, all of that came to an end when Zampa got rid of the Indian captain in a similar manner. Kohli smashed 123 off 95 balls. His innings was laced with 16 fours and a six. Kohli also became the fastest to 4000 ODI runs as captain, surpassing AB de Villiers to the feat.  India eventually lost the match by 32 runs. Australia won the match to stay alive in the five-match ODI series. Zampa, Richardson, and Cummins with three wickets apiece were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors.
