The opening day of the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan on Thursday at Hgaley Oval in Christchurch was washed out due to torrential rain, with even toss not being possible. The rain started from the wee hours of the morning.
The unexpected rain meant the scheduled start of the match was pushed away. The rain continued to play the spoilsport throughout the day and eventually the day’s play had to be called off. There was hope of a start time shortly before lunch when the sun broke through to allow Pakistan’s players a football session, but the rain returned soon. With chances of a start looking bleak, umpires S Ravi and Ian Gould called off play at 4pm, shortly after the scheduled tea interval. Play will start 30 minutes early on each of the next four days to make up for the lost time.
The toss will be held on day two morning at 10 am local time and the match will start at 10.30 am as the weather forecast looks promising. With the first day washed away, the match is now a four day affair so the follow on mark is 150, not 200.
Pakistan have not lost a Test series in New Zealand since 1985.
