NorthEast United FC would look to maintain the momentum when they take on Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League after back-to-back victories. The visitors have made their strongest start in the ISL history with two wins out of the first two games. The North-East club defeated FC Goa 2-0 in their last game, having beaten Kerala Blasters in their first game. Mumbai began their ISL journey with 1-0 victory against FC Pune City which was the ‘Maha Derby’ earlier this week. This was the first time that Mumbai got their campaign off to a winning start. The win boosted the confidence of the entire squad and they are now looking forward to dethrone NorthEast United FC from the top. Both teams will be looking to maintain their hundred percent records in this year’s ISL.
A new addition to the list of ISL venues, Mumbai Football Arena makes its maiden bow hosting NorthEast United who are the table-toppers . They will be playing their first away match today and coach Nelo Vingada sought to be grounded, saying that his side will not take anything for granted. Also Check- ISL 2016 Schedule
On the other hand, The Ranbir Kapoor co-owned side have failed to go past the league stage of the ISL in the past two seasons and with a reinvigorated squad, the Blues of Mumbai under the tutelage of Alexandre Guimaraes, have embarked on a journey to give the football fanatics of the financial capital of India something to cheer about. Also, it should be kept in mind that Mumbai City does not hold a great record against NorthEast United. In their four encounters so far, the Mumbai side have beaten the visitors only once and that too in an enigmatic fashion. A Sunil Chhetri hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last season saw the Highlanders succumb to a 5-1 defeat. Mumbai will play in the absence of Sunil Chhetri, Lalcchuanmawia Fanai, Udanta Singh and Amrinder Singh as these players are busy with Bengaluru FC competing in AFC cup. Haitian winger Sony Norde will also be unavailable as he has been called for his national team.
The onus will be on 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan. The Uruguayan superstar is the biggest name to grace the ISL this season and gave glimpses of what he brings to the team. It was his brilliant flick that created the only goal of the match but for Guimaraes it was clear that opponents will not give him too much space to operate. It is likely he will receive similar attention from NorthEast players.
