It was not the best of the day for Pakistan since landing in England. After England had piled up a record total of 444 in 50 overs, Pakistan was bundled out for 275, thus losing the 3rd ODI by 169 runs and the series, with two more matches to go, as well. Chasing is not Pakistan’s thing. And when it is a record target to chase expecting Pakistan to win is perhaps a foolish thing to do. The Green Shirts capped off their dismal bowling performance with a poor batting display. The tourists gave up the fight after Sharjeel Khan, the only top order batsman to impress, departed. The tourists kept losing wickets, and their reply had no direction. With such a big target, the pressure never really got off Pakistan. The Azhar Ali-led side lost half the team with just 108 run on the board. Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz then tried to develop a partnership but all in vain. However, Mohamamd Amir and Yasir towards the end restored some prided with a 76-run stand for the last wicket. Amir during the process scored a half century and became the first number 11 batsman to do so in ODIs.
For England, Chris Woakes picked four wickets while Adil Rashid scalped two wickets. Liam Plunkett, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Mark Wood chipped in with a wicket each.
Earlier, after opting to bat first, England registered highest ever team total in ODIs. It was Alex Hales’ 171 combined with half centuries by Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan that propelled England to such a huge total.
Hales broke the 23-year-old to register highest individual score by an England batsman in ODIs. He surpassed Robin Smith’s unbeaten 167 set in 1993 against Australia. Hales’ innings was decorated with 22 fours and four sixes. The right-handed opening batsman shared 248-run stand for the second wicket with Joe Root. Root, who scored half-centuries in first two ODIs, went on to register his third consecutive fifty against Pakistan before being dismissed for 85. Once Hales and Root were dismissed, Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan then took centre stage and hammered Pakistan bowlers.
The duo fabricated an unbeaten 161-run partnership for the fourth wicket to take England past Sri Lanka’s record total of 443 for nine set against Netherlands in 2006. While Buttler scored 91 off 51 balls, Morgan made 57 off just 27 balls.
It was not a day to enjoy for Pakistan bowlers as only Hassan Ali and Mohammad Nawaz managed to pick wickets. Wahab Riaz, on the other hand, conceded 110 runs from his quota of 10 overs and now has the second worst bowling figures in ODIs behind Australia’s Mick Lewis, who conceded 113/0 in 2006 against South Africa.
England and Pakistan now meet in the fourth and penultimate match of the series on Sunday, September 01, 2016, at Headingley in Leeds. The fifth game will take place at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on September 04. The two teams will face each other in one-off T20I at Old Trafford in Manchester on September 07.
