Chasing a challenging target of 303 runs, Pakistan crossed the line with four wickets and ten balls to spare. Sarfraz Ahmed was main architect of Pakistan innings along with Shoaib Malik. The duo put on 163 for the fourth wicket after Pakistan lost three wickets for 77 runs. Also Check- Pakistan vs England 5th ODI As it Happened
Chris Woakes removed Sharjeel Khan (10) early as Pakistan once again struggled in the first power play. Azhar Ali and Babar Azam then added 54 for the second wicket to stable the Pakistan innings. However, in 14th over Mark Wood removed both Babar (31) and Azhar (33).
It was then Sarfraz and Malik’s partnership that stole the show. During this stand, both the batsmen reached their respective half centuries. Sarfraz continued his good form while this was Malik’s first fifty against England in England.
Against the run of play, Sarfraz then threw his wicket away and fell ten runs short of what could have been his second century in this series. Sarfraz (90) was dismissed by debutant spinner Liam Dawson.
With Sarfraz back in hutch, it was Malik’s responsibility to guide Pakistan. He kept attack England bowlers, especially Dawson, to help his side reach near the target. However, his ploy to go against spinner did not work as he was dismissed with Pakistan requiring 47 more runs to win. Malik perished for 77 off 80 balls.
Few overs later, Jonny Bairtsow managed to run Mohammad Nawaz (2) out and that sent warning bells in Pakistan camp. It was then the unbeaten 37-run stand between Mohammad Rizwan and Imad Waim that helped Pakistan reach the target. Rizwan and Wasim finished with unbeaten 34 and 16 respectively.
Wood and Dawson picked two wickets each while Waokes managed to pick just one wicket. England had rested Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid for this game and went with Dawson as lone spinner. He proved to be expensive and gave away 70 runs in his eight overs.
Earlier in the day, the toss went Pakistan’s way and the visitors decided to bowl first. England after 92 for three recovered through 72-run stand between Jason Roy and Ben Stokes. Both the batsmen registered impressive half-centuries.
Roy scored 87 off 89 balls while Stokes added 75 off 76 balls. At one stage it looked like England will post over 320, but some excellent death bowling by Pakistan restricted the home side from scoring freely. England lost last five wickets for just 64 runs and ended with 302 on board.
For Pakistan, Hassan Ali scalped career best 4/60 while Mohammad Amir picked 3/50.Umar Gul and Imad Wasim picked a wicket each. The two sides now meet in a T20I on 7th September at Old Trafford.
