Pakistan cricket team will look to continue their winning run against South Africa as they begin the three-match ODI series against South Africa at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Tuesday. Shaheen Shah Afridi will be leading the ODI line-up replacing Mohammad Rizwan as the ODI skipper while Matthew Breetzke will be captain of the injury-hit Proteas side.
Hosts Pakistan had bounced back after losing the first T20I match to South Africa to clinch the three-match T20I series 2-1 with former captain Babar Azam coming up with a brilliant match-winning 68 in the final T20I match last week. International cricket is returning to Faisalabad after a gap of 17 years and it becomes the fifth international venue since cricket return to the terror-hit country in 2015.
While South Africa are playing the ODI series with a second-string side, Pakistan will be playing a full-strength line-up with Fakhar Zaman returning to the side as well. Skipper Afridi will have the services of his premier pacers Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah with the trio bowling together for the first time after 2023 Asia Cup.
Pakistan will also be full of confidence in the ODI format, having whitewashed the Proteas away from home last year. However, in spite, of the whitewash, South Africa enjoy a superior head-to-head record in ODI cricket with 52 wins and 34 losses against Pakistan.
South Africa have suffered a major blow just ahead of the first ODI with batter Dewald Brevis ruled out of the series due to injury. “Dewald Brevis has been ruled out of the three-match One-Day International series against Pakistan due to a low-grade shoulder muscle strain. He sustained the shoulder injury during the third T20 International at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday. Brevis will undergo rehabilitation with the Proteas Men’s medical team in Pakistan in preparation for the upcoming Test tour of India,” a CSA statement read.
