Para-badminton player Raj Kumar was on Wednesday bestowed upon with the prestigious Arjuna Award by Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Sports Secretary Rahul Prasad Bhatnagar was also present on the occasion. Raj Kumar had won a gold medal in the 2015 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in England.
Rathore took to Twitter and shared the pictures.
After receiving the award, Kumar expressed gratitude towards his coaches.
A Times of India report says that two years ago, Kumar, who hails from Punjab, was denied the Arjuna award by the sports ministry after the selection committee ignored his credentials. He then moved the Delhi High Court against the government’s move. Kumar contended that he had a score of 72.5 out of 80 while the award was given to a para-athlete who had scored 50 out of 80.
However, the court now made a verdict in his favour.
“Kumar got a communication from the ministry informing him that he will be presented with the award on September 19. The athlete, together with his close friends, have now reached Delhi to receive the prestigious award,” TOI quoted sources as saying.
