Captain Parthiv Patel led from the front as Gujarat chased down 312 runs against Mumbai in final at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore to win the Ranji Trophy 2016/17. Parthiv played a captain’s knock as he scored match-winning 143 off 196 balls. The left-hander came into bat after Gujarat lost two wickets early. He then took his side close to victory with a fine century. During his stay at the crease, Parthiv smashed 24 fours. With just 13 runs needed to win, Parthiv lost his wicket. But that did not stop Gujarat from registering a historic victory as Rujul Bhatt and Chirag Gandhi helped their side cross the line. This is Mumbai’s only fifth defeat in Ranji Trophy finals, having played record 46 summit clashes. Gujarat started last day of the final on 47 for none, needing another 265 runs to win. However, Mumbai began on a positive note by picking three quick wickets. Balwinder Sandhu and Abhishek Nayar gave defending champions a hope by bowling smartly as the duo shared three wickets to fell between them with Sandhu picking two.

It was then the 116-run stand between Parthiv and Manprit Juneja that put Gujarat back on track. Juneja provided his captain with a valuable support as the duo took momentum away from Mumbai.

Juneja was eventually dismissed by Akhil Herwadkar for a well-made 54. The fall of wicket did not bog down Parthiv as he added 94-run stand with Bhatt and in the process completed his century. Gujarat’s effort is now the highest successful chase in Ranji Trophy final. Also, Parthiv’s 143 is the highest in a successful chase in a Ranji Trophy final.
