New Delhi: The biggest deal of the January transfer window is all set to take place as English club Liverpool have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Spanish club Barcelona for the £145m (€160 million) transfer of star striker Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho, who has a 400million euro (£355m) in his five-and-a-half year Barcelona contract, will become the Catalan’s most expensive signing as well as the third most expensive player in history behind Paris Saint-Germain pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
Confirming the departure of Coutinho, Liverpool on its official website stated, “Liverpool FC can confirm Philippe Coutinho will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms.
“The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities to conclude the transfer immediately.”
Following Liverpool’s confirmation, Barca also posted a video on Twitter to unveil their new player.
The Brazilian made 201 appearances and scored 54 goals for Liverpool after signing in January 2013 from Inter Milan for just £8.5m. Meanwhile, Barca, who are currently leading the La Liga points table, can take a sigh of relief now as after three failed bids in the summer, they have finally got their man.
